Caroline Alexander Weymuller Wellman, 82, of Buck Hill Falls, Pa., died peacefully at home on Dec. 13, 2013, with family in attendance.
She was born in 1931 in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., to Dr. Charles Augustus Weymuller and Caroline Alexander Weymuller, both deceased.
She was married to Howard Dighton Wellman, Jr., for 53 years, from 1955 until his death in 2008. Their lives together took them across the United States and eventually to Wilton, where they lived for 25 years. They retired to Buck Hill Falls in 1992.
Mrs. Wellman graduated from Packer Collegiate Institute in 1949; from Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., with a BA in English in 1953; from New York University with an MA in education in 1956; and from Norwalk Community College with a Library Technical Assistant Certificate in 1988.
While her main occupations were home maker, mother, and wife, Mrs. Wellman’s professional and volunteer jobs included reception and clerical work for her father’s medical practice; “copy boy” for the New York World Telegram and Sun’s reporters, including Gabe Pressman; and teacher for the New York public school system. In Wilton, she was a Girl Scout leader; a founding member of Zion’s Hill Preschool, and a member of the Wilton Soccer Association (WSA).
So that children in the WSA program could see their names and their accomplishments in the paper, Mrs. Wellman had coaches submit each week’s game scores to her, and her write-ups were published in The Wilton Bulletin. She was a proud recipient of the WSA’s “Big Foot” Award. She finished her professional career at Wilton Library where she was program director for Junior Services. She loved her years of leading children’s story times. After her retirement, she volunteered at t he Barrett Friendly Library in Cresco, Pa.
“In her down time, Carol loved to bake, do craft work, knit, draw, assemble collages, make pottery and paint in oils,” her family said. “She also played tennis and paddle tennis, and bowled. Carol loved to read and she loved her dog Abby’s company. Carol was an avid fan of basketball, baseball, football, ice hockey, tennis, and the Olympics.”
She had been a member of the Wilton Congregational Church and the Shore and Country Club.
Mrs. Wellman is survived by children Pam (and Chris) Drummond of Wilton, Martha Wellman of Buck Hill Falls, Pa., Betsy (and Chris) Garry of San Diego Calif., Andy (and Caren) Wellman of Newtown, Conn., six grandchildren: Erika, Andy and Amy Drummond, and Jack, Luke and Anne Wellman; and siblings Gretchen Menger of Ramona, Calif., and Fred Weymuller of Honeoye Falls, N.Y..
