Janice M. Nachtmann
Mary Janice (Martindale) Nachtmann, 93, residing at Sunrise at Ivey Ridge in Alpharetta, Ga., passed away peacefully on Dec. 12, 2015. Janice was born in St. Louis, Mo., on Nov. 12, 1922, to Robert Emmett and Allie Mae (Sinnett) Martindale. She grew up in Webster Groves, Mo., where she graduated from Holy Redeemer School and Nerinx Hall. Janice then attended Maryville College for two years before marrying Navy Lieutenant Robert Burns Nachtmann in January 1945.
After the war, the Nachtmanns raised their five children in several locales before coming to Norwalk, Conn., in 1952 and settling in Wilton in 1965. Jan worked for years in real estate in Wilton while her husband, professionally known as Robert Dale Martin, commuted to work at CBS in New York City. Over the years, Janice greatly enjoyed many various activities, including gardening at their home on Cheesespring Road, tennis, and painting; frequenting the theater with her husband; and exploring the museums and sights of New York and the natural beauties of New England. She was an active member of Our Lady of Fatima parish in Wilton where she engaged in service endeavors, completing a Trinity College program for parish ministry in 1989.
Jan and Rob retired to Albuquerque, N.M., in 1991, where they lived in the foothills of the beautiful Sandia Mountains. Janice was an engaged member of Prince of Peace parish, where she pursued volunteer opportunities. She continued creating a beautiful gardening environment, which gave her real joy. She also loved hiking in the desert, traveling throughout the Southwest and to various different countries, entertaining friends and family, and engaging in classes in various historic and artistic interests.
Janice resided at the home of Sunrise at Ivey Ridge from 2007 until the time of her death. During her time there, many individuals, both at the home (including the resident dog, Beau, whom she loved) and with hospice, as well as volunteers from the local parish, demonstrated great love and caring toward Janice, all deeply appreciated by her children.
Janice was predeceased by her parents and her brother; by her husband of 51 years, Robert, in 1996; by her son, NIcholas, in 2011; and by her grandson, Charles, in 2012. She is survived by her daughters Cynthia Opderbeck (Carl) of Storrs, Conn., Jill Ediger (Richard) of Atlanta, Ga.; Janice Nachtmann of Walnut Creek, Calif.; by her son Timothy Nachtmann (Sandra) of Roswell, Ga.; by eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; by her sister Ann Vahey (Donald) and by her sister-in-law Jane Nachtmann Hogan (James), both of Missouri.
A mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Andrew Church in Roswell, Ga., on Jan. 30, 2016, with burial at Milton Fields in Milton, Ga., in the company of Janice’s husband, son, and grandson.
