Alexandra (Ally) Davatzes, 95, formerly of Greenville, NY, died at her home in Wilton, CT on Thursday, November 21, 2013. A beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was affectionately known as Yaya to all. She devoted herself completely to her family and friends.
She was born January 15, 1918 in Lansford, PA to Helen and Nick Kordes. Mrs. Davatzes is survived by her two children, son Nickolas Davatzes and his wife Dorothea of Wilton, CT, and their children George Davatzes (Jennifer) of Wilton, CT and Nicholas C. Davatzes (Alix) of Jenkintown, PA, daughter Carol Ferrandino and her husband Vince, and their children Anthony and Alexandra of Mount Vernon, NY. Ally is also survived by her great-grandchildren Julia, Nicholas, Elias and Lilly Davatzes.
In 1936 she married George Davatzes and settled in New York City. She also lived in Astoria, NY, Forest Hills, NY and finally Wilton, CT. After her children were grown, she worked for many years with her husband in the fur industry in Manhattan, NY at Madison Furs, a company of which they were part owners. Mrs. Davatzes was married to her beloved husband George for 63 years. Mrs. Davatzes loved gardening, cooking, baking, playing cards and crocheting. She enjoyed watching basketball, as she played for Textile H.S. in NYC. She also volunteered for RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) where she crocheted over 60 lap blankets to be distributed to area nursing homes and was an active member of the Comstock Community Center in Wilton. She was committed to her Greek Orthodox Church of the Archangels in Stamford, CT.
A wake and memorial service was held at Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home and interment at Hillside Cemetery in Wilton. A memorial luncheon to celebrate her life was held at the Norwalk Inn.
