Martha Hedeman Buckingham
Martha Hedeman Buckingham, 84, a longtime Wilton, Conn., and Savannah, Ga., resident, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2017.
Born April 6, 1933, in Atlanta, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Virginia and Arthur Hedeman. She grew up in Wellesley, Mass., and Darien, Conn. She graduated from Sweet Briar College and went on to become a teacher in Burlington, Vt. There she met her husband, Navy pilot and Middlebury graduate Richard Buckingham. They were happily married for 50 years. In their early years, they lived in Vermont, Okinawa, Delaware and St. Louis.
They moved to Wilton in 1962 where they raised their daughter Linda and son Steve. Marty was a travel agent at New Canaan Travel for 25 years. She was also a substitute teacher for many years in the Wilton school system and was involved with the Wilton Woman’s Club, Encore Club, and numerous volunteer agencies. Mimi, as she was affectionately known by her grandchildren, loved to paint and train her Shelties for dog shows in obedience and agility.
They retired in 1995 to the Landings on Skidaway Island, Ga. At the Landings, she loved to travel, entertain, play golf and was a member of PEO and The One Hundred, which benefits Memorial Children’s Hospital.
They spent summers on Cape Cod where they loved having all the family visit. She spent the last year and a half at The Greens in Wilton.
She is survived by her daughter Linda (Peter) Thomson of Wilton, Conn., daughter-in-law Karin Buckingham of Oconomowoc, Wis., sister-in-law Peggy Hedeman of Savannah, Ga., and sister-in-law Susan McGarvey of Needham, Mass. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Scott, Doug, Meredith and Haley. Marty was predeceased by husband Richard, son Steve and brother Bill.
Marty will be remembered for the twinkle in her eye, her love of ice cream, a warm and caring personality, sense of humor and devotion to family and friends.
