Mary Carol Buckley

Former Wiltonian Mary Carol Buckley, known as Carol, died with her family at her side on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016 at the Shell Point Retirement Community in Fort Myers, Fla.

Carol was born Jan. 4, 1928 in Jackson Heights, N.Y. to the late Frank V. Moran and Ann Farrell Moran, the third of four children. She attended the Bishop McDonnell High School and Berkeley College, and she started her career as a secretary at NBC in 1946 in New York City and later at Benton & Bowles as an assistant account executive.

Carol married James “Jim” Buckley in New York City in 1957. They had four children when they moved to Heather Lane in Wilton in 1963. The Buckleys were active parishioners in Our Lady of Fatima where their children attended grade school. In addition to homemaking, sewing, gardening, cooking and carpooling, Carol resumed working in 1968 at St. Jerome’s Rectory in Norwalk, Conn., and continued until her retirement from Perkin Elmer in 1992. She and Jim became snow birds in 1994, splitting their time between Wilton and Sanibel, Fla., and she moved to Sanibel full time following his death in 2009.

Carol was the loving mother to her children Jack Buckley of Scottsdale, Ariz., Julia Buckley Morris (married to Dr. Tom Morris) of Decatur, Ga., Mary Kate Buckley of Jackson, Wyo., and Margaret “Mugs” Buckley (married to Robert Imbriaco) of San Francisco, Calif., and grandmother to Sean and Matt Buckley, sister-in-law to Elizabeth Buckley Banks of Quincy, Mass., and Sister Josepha Buckley of Saint Catharine, Ky.

Carol loved life. She will be remembered for her laugh and her parties. Most of all, she adored her family and treasured her friends. Her positive attitude and courage for the many years that she battled her terminal lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis, inspired anyone with whom she came in contact. She never complained and maintained until the day she died that she “lived a charmed life.”

A Celebration of Life will be held at Saint Isabel’s Roman Catholic Church in Sanibel, Fla., on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 11 a.m. and her ashes will be buried with her late husband of 52 years, Jim, at the Bourne National Cemetery in Bourne, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Catholic Charities.
