George Browne Cowper

George Browne Cowper passed away to be with his Lord and Savior on May 25, 2016.

George was born May 5, 1929, in the western New York farming community of Newfane. His youthful days were spent raising pigs and working in the family apple orchards. Starting his education in a one-room schoolhouse, he graduated from Ridley College, St. Catharine’s, Ontario, and ultimately Colgate University. Soon thereafter, he married Lynn Colborn of Fairport, N.Y., in November of 1954 and were together for 45 years.

George started his successful business career with IBM in Buffalo, N.Y. selling punch-clocks, before moving the family to Wilton for his new appointed position as manager of industry relations in New York City. After 35 years of service, George retired and he and Lynn moved to Kernersville, N.C.

After the passing of his beloved wife, George moved to River Landing in Colfax, N.C. He was a proud U.S. Marine as well as a 50-year member of the Ancient Landmarks Lodge F. & A. M. A lover of the outdoors, George was a valiant supporter of many nature organizations, as well as volunteering his time as a master gardener for the state of North Carolina.

George was also an avid golfer, who enjoyed many hours with friends and family as a member of the Silvermine Golf Club in Norwalk, and Pine Knolls Golf Club in Kernersville, N.C. He loved being a sports spectator, rarely missing any of his kids sporting events, as well as being particularly fond of the PGA Tour, the Buffalo Bills, and the entire NCAA College Baseball World Series.

George is survived by his five children, Lynda Baer (Bill), of Fredericksburg, Va.; Scott Cowper (Robin), of Franklin, Mass.; Leigh Cowper, of Leesburg, Va.; Holly Lefever (Mark), of Pittsburgh; and Mark Cowper (Cheri), of Hilliard, Ohio. He also leaves to cherish his memory five granddaughters and five grandsons. He is also survived by his sister Nancy Ronalter, of Southern Pines, N.C., and many nieces and nephews.

George also leaves a legacy of integrity. He passed along to his children and grandchildren, an awareness of selfless giving, a romance for God’s creation, and a love for family that has been imbedded into the hearts of those who loved him.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 18, 2016 in the Multipurpose Room at River Landing. Burial will be in Olcott, N.Y. at a later date.

Wright Cremation & Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be expressed online at www.wrightcremationandfuneral.com.
