Carol K. Gretemeyer, 93, a nine-year resident of Wilton, died peacefully on Saturday, April 23, at Norwalk Hospital.

Born in Rye, N.Y., on March 23, 1923, she was the daughter of Daniel E. and Mary Bourne Kelly. She was raised in Rye before marrying her late husband, James W. Gretemeyer, in 1946. They moved to Norwalk, in 1955, where they raised their family.

Carol’s career encompassed working for nonprofit organizations, initially with the Norwalk chapter of the American Heart Association, and later as the office manager for the Fairfield County chapter of the American Cancer Society. She retired in 1993.  During her retirement years, Carol became more active as a parishioner of St. Jerome Church in Norwalk, joined the Norwalk’s Women’s Club, and travelled to Ireland and England.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by their daughter, Joanne G. Walsh, and Carol’s sister, Gwendolyn K. McManus.

She is survived by her son, Gregory D. Gretemeyer and his wife Jo-Anne, of Marshfield, Mass.; as well as her daughters Barbara Fedge of Highland Lakes, N.J., and Janice Rathbone and her husband Bryce of Easton, Conn.

She is also survived by her sister, Mary K. Black, of Columbia, S.C., and her brother Daniel E. Kelly, Jr., and his wife Florence (Flossie) Kelly of Norwalk.

Other surviving family members include her grandsons Dan Fedge and his wife Kate of Sparta, N.J., and Dillon Gretemeyer of Brighton, Mass.; her two great-grandchildren, Noah and Caroline Fedge; and her son-in-law Dennis Walsh, his wife Eileen, and their daughter Jean of Hawthorne, N.J., as well as several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to so many people who participated in her care in recent years, especially those at the Greens of Cannondale in Wilton.

There will be no calling hours. Interment at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Trumbull will be private. The family will hold a memorial gathering to celebrate Carol’s life later this spring. Contributions in Carol’s memory may be made to St. Jerome Church, 23 Half Mile Road, Norwalk, CT.
