Jane Audrey Mentzer
Jane Audrey Mentzer passed away peacefully on June 22, 2015 in Norwalk Hospital. She was born in Struthers, Ohio, on Nov. 11, 1921 to Ruth G. Creed and Judge Dahl B. Cooper. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her twin sister Jean Funkhouser, her older sister, Betty Kibbel and her brother, Perry Cooper.
Jane grew up in Struthers, Ohio and attended Struthers High School where she and her sister Jean graduated as co-valedictorians. From high school, she attended Oberlin College in Ohio. Jane married her one and only love, Charles Calvin Mentzer on Nov. 12, 1943, while he was a Captain in the U.S. Army Air Force. After the war they lived in Delaware, Ohio where Jane worked as a kindergarten teacher before moving to Schenectady, N.Y. where Chuck was enrolled in the General Electric Management Training program. Upon completion of the program, Chuck was transferred to New York City and they moved to Scarsdale, N.Y. and then eventually to Norwalk, Conn., where they built their first home and finally to Wilton where she resided for 45 years.
Jane was a longstanding member of the First Congregational Church on the Green, a member of The Beta Circle church organization and a volunteer for many years in their Head Start program. Being an active boater and golfer, the family for many years were members of the Shore and Country Club and the Silvermine Golf Club. She loved to travel and she and her husband had one wish, to visit every state in the United States which they accomplished prior to his death in March 1998.
She is survived by her son Charles C. Mentzer, Jr. and his wife Jeannette of Beverly Hills, Mich., and her two granddaughters, Susan and Jennifer and her husband Robert Pankau and their daughter, Noelle. She is also survived by her daughter Barbara and her husband Ronald Jasinski, formerly of Wilton and now residing in Danbury, and her grandson, Christopher Jasinski, formerly of Denver and now living in San Francisco.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to all the wonderful and caring doctors, nurses and staff at Norwalk Hospital and to The Greens at Cannondale, where she spent seven very happy years under their loving care.
Jane was a kind, thoughtful, caring and loving mother, grandmother and friend who will be sorely missed but always remembered and the family takes comfort in knowing she now is reunited with her childhood sweetheart and siblings.
